Carpi is known throughout Europe for its clothing and textiles manufacturing industry. The Carpi district in fact plays a key role on the Italian fashion scene, with more than fifty factory outlets and outlet stores with the top designer labels to be found in the area.
As well as the many fashion-related events cultural programmes and fairs are also organised in this town in the Modena area from which regional craft products can be purchased.
HERE'S A SELECTION OF SOME OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING EVENTS:
CARPINFIORE:
A flower festival held in April of each year, with over one hundred exhibitors positioned along the streets of the town centre to transform Carpi into an open-air urban garden.
INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF DIFFERENT ABILITIES
An event which started in 1999, organised by the Cooperativa Sociale Nazareno and held each year in May in Carpi, Bologna, Modena and Correggio. It offers a one-week programme of workshops, conferences, art exhibitions and theatre performances in which artistes from different countries stage the excellence of difference.
MOTOTIGELLA
A picturesque event which, since 2002, has combined the passion for motors with that for the cuisine from the Emilia region, in particular Crescentine bread, also named Tigelle after the utensil used for cooking.
SAGRA DELLA LASAGNA E DEL LAMBRUSCO
Again with a culinary and culinary-related theme, Carpi celebrates two of the most significant local food and wine products – lasagne washed down with plenty of the typical local wine, Lambrusco D.O.C.
FESTIVAL DEL RACCONTO
A literary festival held in October in squares and various other venues in Carpi with events, meetings, theatre performances and workshops dedicated to short stories. Past years have seen participation by writers, musicians and actors including Stefano Benni, Maria Paiato, Francois Khan, Clara Sereni, Mimmo Cuticchio and many more.
CIOCCOLATO IN PIAZZA
Carpi in November is a delicious place to be for all fans of chocolate. Exhibitors from all over Italy invade the town to promote the best chocolate-based products.
CONTROL +C FESTIVAL
Control+C is held in December of each year in Carpi in different locations, exploring contemporary arts from different perspectives. Past participants have included artists such as Broadcast, Dani Siciliano, Christian Fennesz, Junior Boys, Banjo Or Freakout, Julia Kent, Wu Ming2 & Stefano Pilia, Bochum Welt, Allez Allez, Marcello Giordani and many others.
MOMANT
In the scenic setting of Palazzo dei Pio, some of Italy’s leading antiques dealers exhibit every November at MoMAnt, exhibition and market of antique and modern paintings.
GIORNATE RAMAZZINIANE
More than eighty members of the Collegium Ramazzini and their guests, from twenty-five countries, meet in October each year at Palazzo dei Pio, the international location of the Collegium, to listen to scientific papers on the various subjects that are part of the relationship between development, the environment and public health.
Carpi has played host to the Giornate Ramazziniane since 1983 as the birthplace of Bernardino Ramazzini, a seventeenth-century doctor considered to be the founder of modern occupational medicine.
CARPI BALSAMICA
Another typical product from the area is the traditional Modena balsamic vinegar.
Every year in May, in the setting of Carpi’s splendid town centre, Carpi Balsamica is held, an event filled with meetings, conversations, debates and guided tastings as a celebration of this symbolic product of Modena’s food and wine culture.
PHILOSOPHY FESTIVAL
In September Modena, Carpi and Sassuolo organise a “philosophy festival” with plenty of music, art, science and food. Classes are held in public squares, theatres and churches in the three towns. Over the years the festival has seen participation by major figures in philosophy and other areas, such as Enzo Bianchi and Jeremy Rifkin. On the Saturday evening there is also Tiratardi, a programme of philosophy-related events which lasts for most of the night. The majority of the events, with few exceptions, are completely free of charge.
GALLERIA FERRARI
Modena is considered to be the iconic location of Italian motor racing.
Maranello is home to Galleria Ferrari, opened in February 1990, which houses the cars, pictures and trophies which are part of the history of the glorious marque.
A modern and functional building is used not only for the museum but also for a moving display which changes regularly. Structured in five areas, the Galleria Ferrari offers visitors a display of past and present F1 cars, the Gran Turismo and technological innovation area, photography exhibitions and original furnishing items. The key section of the Galleria is of course the display of Ferrari cars, some of the most prestigious models in its history and product range.
